Batman Animated Sequel Series Rumored

A potential sequel series to iconic 1990s animation game-changer “Batman: The Animated Series” may be in development at HBO Max.

The original series ran from 1992-1995 and not only began the DC animated universe but its style and quality storytelling still impacts productions decades later – offering celebrated and sometimes definitive takes on numerous characters in the canon from Mr. Freeze to Two-Face and Mark Hamill’s memorable work as The Joker.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith and his Fatman Beyond co-host Marc Bernardin dropped the rumor, claiming to have heard it from very reliable sources. Smith says:

“I think that’s real. I don’t think that’s a rumor, I wouldn’t say ‘Set your watch to it,’ but it’s an idea whose time is not only coming, I think it came, and it’s smoking a cigarette. I think that’s gonna happen. How f–king amazing would that be because you can just literally pick up and keep going. It’s not like, -oh we gotta explain why everyone’s older,’ it’s f–king animation man so you can go right back to those amazing f–king stories.”

The move would make sense for HBO Max and DC, both of whom have had success with the more adult-oriented “Harley Quinn” series.

The original series is credited mostly to Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, along with Paul Dini, though the latter two have since moved over to Marvel Animation in differing capacities.
