Justin Lin’s “F9: The Fast Saga” plummeted in China over the weekend, but held up in its other hold-over global markets. This ninth entry in the “Fast and Furious” franchise pulled in $20.76 million in China this weekend, a drop of 85% from last weekend’s $136 million launch.
The drop however has not been attributed to the recent controversy concerning John Cena’s walking back of phrasing surrounding Taiwan. Rather it’s due to a more consistent display of Chinese audiences delivering low multipliers on films, Hollywood or not, as most cinemagoers there check out movies only on their debut weekend.
The most recent films in the ‘Fast’ franchise, “The Fate of the Furious” and “Hobbs & Shaw,” both dropped over 70% in their sophomore outings in the Chinese market.
“F9” has earned $185 million in China to date and will soon pass “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Hobbs and Shaw” to become the second-biggest non-MCU Hollywood film in China – behind only “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” ($267 million). Check out a new clip from the film below:
