F9 To Flashback To The First Fast

“F9: The Fast Saga” finally arrives in cinemas on June 25th, just over a full year after it originally intended to land and a full twenty years after the original “The Fast and the Furious” in 2001.

Speaking in a long video interview with EW recently, producer/star Vin Diesel revealed that the new film will have a special connection going back to the original first feature.

Specifically the film will include a scene that takes place in the aftermath of Diesel’s Dominic Toretto beating Paul Walker’s Brian in their first race in the streets of Los Angeles. Diesel says: “What’s so exciting about F9 is we revisit that moment from a different perspective.”

He’s most likely referring to a retcon moment and we’ll see Dom’s estranged brother Jakob (John Cena) witnessing the event from a distance. Indeed Diesel indicates the new film will go back to a point well before that as well – again to likely establish the Dom-Jakob relationship:

“The whole world has this excitement about this movie coming out, but for those who have been with the franchise, it’s even more special. Because if you can remember the first movie, you are now going to go before the first movie and understand the first movie even more…that’s cool stuff.

I’m a [Dungeons & Dragons] head, so that’s like origins stuff. To see family members you never thought you would have seen – it’s gonna kind of blow your mind. We’ve been wanting to know: where was Dom before he became Dom? Who were his influences? That’s going to be really rich with story, and a lot of fun to see.”

Diesel was also asked which actor would he choose to drop back into the first film to help build out the mythology of the franchise – his answer in the process indicates a potential casting announcement for the role of the father of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) – Sir Michael Caine:

“I guess if I were to think where we’re going with the next chapter – Michael Caine. I might have found a way – you’re saying if I could have redesigned the mythology or added little elements of the mythology – I could have done something with Helen Mirren and Michael Caine’s character and played something out. I could have introduced something [for] the future.”

Caine has not appeared in any of the ‘Fast’ movies to date, but was a part of one of the most famous car heist movies ever made with “The Italian Job”.

“F9: The Fast Saga” is currently targeting a June 25th release.
