England manager Gareth Southgate has provided an update on Trent Alexander-Arnold after he suffered an injury during the friendly victory over Austria, just nine days before Euro 2020.

On Tuesday, Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold was selected in England’s 26-man squad for this summer’s Euros.

The 22-year-old was hoping to stake his claim for a starting spot in Wednesday’s friendly against Austria, and while he impressed for most of the match, an injury late on may have put paid to his Euros campaign.

After making a routine clearance, Alexander-Arnold pulled up and immediately signalled to the England bench that he needed to come off.

Southgate had already used his substitutions by that point but given the nature of the match, Alexander-Arnold still left the field, hobbling around the pitch with the aid of a physio.

Asked about Alexander-Arnold’s injury after the match, Southgate said: ‘We’re going to have a little look. It’s not good to see the way he went off but we’ll have to assess it over the next 24 hours.

‘I think it’s a thigh [injury]. The medical team are still assessing it. We just have and see. It’s not a good sign. We’ll know more in the next 24 hours.

‘Let’s see how Trent is first and then we’ll go from there. We don’t know the full extent but the last thing you want is to see him go off in the way he did.’

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the game as England beat Austria 1-0 at Wembley in their penultimate game before Euro 2020.

Southgate’s side face Romani on Saturday before their opening Euros fixture against Croatia on June 13.

The England boss added: ‘I thought we started very well. We used the ball well in the first hour or so.

‘We were playing against a very good side. They have good players. They get in between the lines well.

‘The first hour was good in terms of quality. After that we needed to make a lot of changes and preserve people. We got a bid disjointed and people had cramp.

‘We were hanging on at the end. It was understandable given the changes.

‘Jack Grealish showed some lovely touches. You can see he’s still getting to full fitness – with the bursts you know he can make. He’s a quality player.’
