A California company is recalling herring packed in oil because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Officials have not reported how the problem was discovered.

There is concern that consumers may still have the product in their homes because of its long shelf life. The recalled herring has an “expiration” date of Aug. 8, 2021, according to a company recall notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

B&I Overseas Trading Inc. of Van Nuys, CA, reports distributing the implicated fish to International retail stores in Washington. The company’s recall notice says all remaining units have been removed from sale.

The recall notice does not indicate whether any illnesses have been reported in relation to the herring. B&I Overseas Trading Inc. and the FDA are continuing to investigate the source of the problem, according to the recall notice.

To determine whether they have the recalled fish in their homes, consumers should look for the following label information: “Veladis herring in oil with Italian spices” in 17.64 ounce (500 gram) plastic packages; expiration date of 08/08/2021; and a UPC number of 4823097903896.

Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 818-285-6936 or email [email protected].
