Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has urged Manchester United to bid for Leicester City star Caglar Soyuncu this summer as the defender would be the perfect partner for Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils spent £80million on Maguire last summer but it took until the final days of the window to complete the deal as the Foxes held out for a record fee.

United have kept five clean sheets in their last seven matches as Maguire’s formed a good partnership with Victor Lindelof.

However, the Red Devils will be looking to continue their progress next season and centre-back is seen as an area in which they can make further marginal gains.

And Sherwood, who believes the club are three players away from challenging, believes Soyuncu would be the perfect signing.

‘I agree with Michael [Owen] I think they’re three players away,’ Sherwood told DAZN.

‘I think they need extra cover at centre-back. I think Soyuncu – I know Robbie Savage won’t be happy because they’re taking him from Leicester – but if the money is right they sell, like they did with Harry Maguire.

‘I think he would be outstanding there. He can play on the front foot and keep them up the field.’

Sherwood claims United have already sewn up a deal for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.

The former Blackburn midfielder managed Grealish at Villa Park and says the 24-year-old is set to move to Old Trafford.

But beyond that, Sherwood believes a centre forward should be the third signing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes this summer.

‘They need a no9,’ said Sherwoord.

‘Find a no9. wIt’s very difficult to go out and get a Harry Kane but if they managed to do that – they are the biggest club in the world – then they can challenge. They are that close.

‘This boy Bruno Fernandes has made such a difference to them. He’s the last piece of the jigsaw that they needed but the dead piece of the jigsaw which is Paul Pogba he’s brought him back to life, brought him into the party again.’
