Kalvin Phillips would not be welcome back in Leeds if he switches his boyhood club for Manchester United, according to Danny Mills.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the England midfielder, in a move that would be a bitter pill to swallow for the Leeds fanbase.

Phillips is a fans favourite at Elland Road and has become one of the most crucial players for any team in the Premier League.

However, Man Utd are screaming out for a player of the 25-year-old’s profile, with his England midfielder partner Declan Rice also rumoured to be a transfer target.

And ex-Leeds and Manchester City defender Mills has urged Phillips to ignore the recent rumours.

He told talkSPORT: “He [Phillips] is an outstanding player, we know that, he’s absolutely superb.

“His performances for England have put him on a whole new level.

“There will be a lot of interest from a lot of clubs.

“Who needs a midfield player? Manchester United do. Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips would be there.”

When asked about the prospect of swapping Elland Road for Old Trafford, Mills said: “I mean, other players have done it. Rio [Ferdinand] left, Rio was only there a year. Alan Smith did it, and he’s not particularly welcome back in Leeds now.

“Kalvin is Leeds through and through but if they come knocking…

“I’d have never gone to be honest, I’d have never played for Man United… well I never got asked!”

Mills was also asked if he would be welcome back in his hometown if he moves to Man Utd, to which he simply said: “No.”

On the other hand, former Aston Villa and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton thinks a move to the Red Devils would be “very difficult to turn down” for Phillips.

In an interview with Football Insider, Hutton has suggested that Phillips “ticks all the boxes” for the Premier League giants.

He said: “I think it’s a little bit different now, if I’m totally honest.

“I think the opportunity to move to a club of Manchester United’s stature would be very difficult to turn down. Man United are crying out for a player like Kalvin Phillips.

“They’re desperate for that sort of player. He ticks all the boxes for them. I think he can make Manchester United a better team if I’m totally honest.”
