Famed character actor Charles Grodin has died at the age of 86. Grodin died Tuesday of bone marrow cancer at his home in Connecticut.
Grodin was famed for his droll humor and likably cranky characters in films across the late 1960s through to the early 1990s including “Midnight Run,” “King Kong,” “Sunburn,” “Heaven Can Wait,” “Dave,” “Catch-22,” “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” “The Lonely Guy,” “Last Resort,” “Ishtar,” “The Woman in Red,” “Clifford,” “Taking Care of Business,” “Real Life,” “The Great Muppet Caper,” “Seems Like Old Times,” “Thieves” and “The Heartbreak Kid” where he first broke through.
He also had a small early role in “Rosemary’s Baby” and was known to a whole generation of kids for his part as the dad in the big dog “Beethoven” movies along with more recent appearances in works like “While We’re Young,” “The Humbling,” “Louie” and ABC’s Bernie Madoff miniseries.
Grodin also hosted an issue-oriented CNBC talk show in the mid-late 1990s, wrote several books and penned a column for the New York Daily News for nearly a decade.
