Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United have to improve their squad to win the Premier League title.

Manchester United finally ended their resistance to Manchester City’s pursuit of the English championship after Leicester beat a much-changed side 2-1 at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Solskjaer defended his decision to rest a number of key players for Manchester United’s second of four games in nine days.

The Red Devils face Liverpool on Thursday followed by a trip to Fulham next Tuesday, having already faced and beaten Aston Villa on Sunday.

David de Gea, Eric Bailly, Donny van de Beek, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood all still started, while Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes were introduced from the bench in the second half.

But Solskjaer feels that Manchester United are a couple of players short of properly challenging a “fantastic” Manchester City at the Premier League’s summit.

“You know if you want to take up the challenge with them, of course we have to strengthen our squad,” he told BT Sport.

“Congratulations to them, they have had a fantastic season, but I’m very pleased with my boys because they have made it into the last 10 days of the season with a Man City team ahead of us, lauded as the best in Europe, so we have done well.

“But we want to take the next step and it might be that we need a couple more to have a stronger squad.

“That’s a long process. We know what we want to do. I think, you know, congratulations to City for winning the league. That’s where we want to be.

“We’re not there yet they have put the bar where it is and that’s up to us to take the next step.”

Manchester United have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks, with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho reportedly regarded as a ‘priority’. A move for Harry Kane to appease disgruntled supporters has also been suggested.
