Millie Bobby Brown was all about empowerment as she lifted the lid on new Netflix film, Enola Holmes.
The Stranger Things actress switched Hawkins for 19th Century England in the new movie, playing the titular character – aka Sherlock Holmes’ teenage sister.
She starred alongside an A-List cast, including Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, Helena Bonham-Carter.
Discussing her turn as the free-spirited super-sleuth, the 16-year-old revealed she wanted young women to feel ‘empowered’ after watching.
Chatting away in a video on Netflix’s Film Club YouTube channel, she said: ‘At the beginning of the film, Enola just wants to be loved and looked at as a young woman.
‘And at the end of the film, she accepts that it’s actually way better to be who she truly is.
‘I think that if young women walk away from this film feeling empowered, thinking that they have a seat at the table, that their voices are going to be heard, then I think that’s what the film is all about.’
We stan MBB so hard.
And it turns out her co-stars feel the exact same, with Henry – who plays Sherlock Holmes – raving about Millie’s performance, and those moments she spoke directly to the audience.
‘I think with breaking the fourth wall, it’s a very tricky thing to do,’ he said. ‘Unless the person who is doing it is very charismatic.
‘Millie is very charismatic. She’s extraordinarily good at it, and I think everyone’s in for a treat.’
However, there is one thing the child star struggled with while on set – speaking in an English accent.
Millie grew up in the UK and, despite moving to the US when she was younger, she has managed to retain her accent.
But, after years of playing Eleven in Stranger Things, she became so used to speaking as an American that she had to relearn how to act with a different accent.
Revealing her struggle, she told Radio Times: ‘For the last five years I’ve been playing an American character in Stranger Things and I found it really challenging being British in this, even though I am a Brit.
‘I had to learn how to speak again because I’m so used to speaking in an American accent.’
Well, she smashed it.
Enola Holmes is based on the book series of the same name by Nancy Springer and is set in England in 1884.
It follows the story of Enola who suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), both set on sending her away to a finishing school for “proper” young ladies.
Refusing to follow their wishes, Enola escapes to search for her mother in London.
But the journey isn’t quite as straightforward, and she becomes entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runaway.
She attempts to outwit her famous brother by unravelling a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history.
Enola Holmes is released on Netflix on 23 September.
