Surgical technicians (also known as surgical technologists) occupy a valuable position in the medical field. Education to become a surgical technician takes roughly two years, not counting college prerequisite requirements, and entry-level techs earn around twenty-five thousand dollars a year. The daily duties of surgical technicians vary depending on their specialty. There are two main branches a technician can fill. He or she can be a Scrub tech or a Circulating tech. Scrub techs most often work directly in the operating room (OR) while Circulating techs serve as a go between from the OR and facilities rooms throughout a hospital.
Scrub Technologists oversee supplies for operations, provide and maintain scrubs, gowns and gloves, provide sterile equipment for all procedures and keep counts on necessary materials. They are also responsible for passing instruments during a procedure and preparing sterile dressings when needed. Scrub techs have a meticulous daily duty and enjoy the career if they are motivated by attention to detail.
Circulating techs have a more mobile job description, moving in and out of the OR as needed. They are primarily responsible for transferring patients from a bed onto a gurney and from a gurney to the operating table. Secondary, though equally important, tasks include providing new sterile equipment for the OR, assisting anesthesia personnel and attending to dressings during surgery. Circulating techs must be inclined to moving about and adapting to changing environments to succeed in the work.
During schooling, students will be taught the basics to fulfill both a Scrub and Circulating position in a hospital with an emphasis on anatomy and medical terminology. Minor emphasis is placed on equipment handling and the Nursing Continuum. Medical ethics are stressed for techs, giving them a well-balanced training that applies to both nurses and doctors.
To enjoy a career as a surgical tech, people will be inclined toward task specific work. Though patient interaction is moderately high, the majority of hands on work is with patients who are anesthetized and therefore not interactive. The coworkers surrounding a tech will often be focused on surgery and so not responsive to coworker interaction. People who succeed as techs do not feel lonely easily.
Success as a tech is further ensured when people enjoy routine. Even a circulating tech fills a specific role that does not have large variation from day to day. Either role has strong focus on routine and precision. People who enjoy variety may be better suited for a nurse’s or a nurse aide’s job. On the other hand, consistency-minded individuals will find relief in a well-defined setting.
Surgical Technologists are a crucial part of the OR’s team. As they interact with doctors patients and nurses, their service streamlines a stressful environment. Technologists are important to the treatment team and serving those performing an operation. They are the most important aspect of a fluidly operating surgical procedure.
