When it comes to ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of manipulative materials in remedial reading instructions, especially sight words or high frequency words, the following are important things a reading teacher must do:

First, material preparations. Any materials available around could be helpful for a creative or resourceful reading teacher, especially if the school is not technologically oriented or what. Target words could be printed on a piece of bond paper or small cut -out letters forming words and use for games using beads, seeds, pebbles or other indigenous materials as " pantantos" liken to Bingo Sight Words. Actually, I have changed the name Bingo into Verbo so as to dissociate the game from negative connotation, that one played in casino or neighborhood diversion time like mahjong and other game cards.

I laminated Verbo cards for durability purposes and have been using them for my reading remediation instruction. In fact, I have also made Verbo cards for other subject areas like Mathematics, Science and more.

Second, play time . Aside from individual learning of target words by reading them from stacks of cards, challenged readers could also have Verbo play time wherein pupils could have fun and exciting play. Before the game starts, pupils must choose a pattern like diagonal, horizontal, vertical or cover all. The first one to complete a pattern is declared a winner upon reading correctly the sight words in a completed pattern. Then, another pattern is played and read on till everyone has a chance to read and feel the confidence of being able to play with other pupils, having fun and mastery of important social skills like taking turns, showing respect, among others.

Third, rubrics is a must. Scoring on their mastered words read should also be coupled with value chart. Yes, value is being monitored and strengthened and so on during play. A reading teacher knows the essence of emphasizing them every time they are playing manipulative or doing group work.

Last, fun should be the focus of playing manipulative . If the pupils are no longer happy with what they have been doing, say they have already mastered the target sight words for mastery purposes, teacher should look for other ways to strengthen their reading skills like guiding them to use those sight words in a phrase, sentence, paragraph and so on.

Variety plays important role in ensuring pupils' interest intact and teacher's enthusiasm in providing the needed materials in reading sight words mastery through the use of manipulative.
