HBO has given the green light to “The Last of Us,” the TV series adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game series.

The story is set twenty years after the destruction of modern civilization in a biological apocalypse involving fungal spores. The action centers on Joel, a hardened survivor who is hired to smuggle a fourteen-year-old girl named Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. The seemingly small job becomes a brutal journey as they come to depend on each other for survival.

The series is being developed by “Chernobyl” showrunner Craig Mazin, “Game of Thrones” producer Carolyn Strauss and the game’s writer and creative director Neil Druckmann. HBO and Sony Pictures TV are producing along with PlayStation Productions, Word Games and game developer Naughty Dog.

The series has been in development since March but has only now gotten the green light. It joins other game-to-TV adaptations on the way including Showtime’s “Halo” series which is currently filming, and the recently announced “Assassin’s Creed” series which is in early development.
