Universal Wins July 4Th Box Office Trifecta

Though under 50% of a usual July 4th holiday, the weekend box-office is showing signs of recovery with an overall $71 million tally.

“F9” once again was in pole position with $24 million for its second weekend – a decline of 66% which is on par with previous entries in the franchise.

By the end of Monday it’s expected to rack up $32.7 million for the four-day, a domestic total of $125.8 million so far, and will pass the worldwide total of just over $500 million – the only non-Chinese film to pass that marker since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in late 2019.

As expected, Universal Pictures held the top three spots on North American charts – taking second place with “The Boss Baby: Back in Business” snaring $17.4 million for the three-day and $23.1 million for the four-day (the original opened to $50 million). This was despite the film also being available at no extra charge on Peacock.

In third place was “The Forever Purge” with $12.75 million over the weekend and set for $15.86 million for the four-day – a low for the franchise which usually opens in the $20-30 million range.

Fourth went to “A Quiet Place Part II’ with a further $4.2 million, bringing its total up to $145 million. That film will be coming to the Paramount+ service the Monday after next. Fifth was “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” with a further $3 million and giving it a total of $32.2 million.

A24’s dark comedy “Zola” got off to a strong start on the speciality front with $2.4 million. Questlove’s documentary “Summer of Soul” also fared well with $650,000 even with the work premiering simultaneously on Hulu.
