At-home workouts can mean flexibility (no set schedule) and privacy (no shirt? no problem!). Depending on the discipline, they can also mean having to fit and access a bunch of equipment in already-tight living quarters. And that’s before factoring in the additional challenges that come with shared common areas, at-home offices, and remote school setups.
The good news is that more and more companies are enabling—and encouraging—the at-home gym phenomenon by offering compact workout equipment like adjustable weights and portable fitness machines for small spaces. But if you’re finding that your yoga mats and blocks, or your weights and bands, are starting to pile up in a disorganized fashion, it may be time to invest in some shoppable organizational systems that can help you get your gear, well, in gear.
“Finding and digging out your workout equipment shouldn’t be a workout in itself,” Laura Cattano, a professional organizer and interior stylist, tells SELF. “Everyone knows if something is within easy reach, it’s more likely to be used, so storing your workout equipment where you work out is essential.”
When you’re organizing your gear, Kristyn Ivey, a KonMari consultant and home stylist at For the Love of Tidy suggests positioning items upright and on their edges so you can get a sense of what you have at a glance. “Reduc[ing] visual clutter by storing smaller items in hamper-style bins that can tuck easily into a corner” can also be helpful, and if necessary, Ivey says to use dividers to create smaller compartments inside.
And then, of course, there are also systems you can buy to keep everything off the floor and out of your way. From high-aiming wall mounts to low-barrier drawers, we asked organization and fitness experts to share more tips, tricks, and product picks for how to organize your workout gear, and make the most of your space and sweat sessions.
