‘Are they serious?’ – Carragher rubbishes Sterling-Spurs links

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Raheem Sterling has no reason to join Tottenham Hotspur amid links of a move this summer.

After shining for Liverpool between 2012 and 2015, Sterling signed for Manchester City. They paid an initial £44m to bring him to the Etihad.

Sterling has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best forwards under Pep Guardiola.

English media have an embarrassing Germany obsession

The forward is now a three-time winner of the Premier League and a four-time winner of the Carabao Cup. He also won the FA Cup in 2018/19.

For City, Sterling has 114 goals and 87 assists from his 292 appearances across all competitions.

Guardiola‘s side are interested in signing Tottenham star Harry Kane this summer. He wants to leave Spurs as he wishes to win team trophies.

City have already placed an offer that is worth around £100m. Sterling is one of five players they are willing to offer as makeweights in the deal.

In his column for The Telegraph, Carragher suggested that Sterling is one of the most “underrated” players of his era:

“When it comes to being the most underrated England player of this era, Sterling is out on his own.

“I can’t believe I have read some reports suggesting he [Sterling] could be a makeweight in a deal to take Kane to City.

“With respect, do people think Sterling is at a point in his career where he would join Spurs? Are they serious? If he was available, top Champions League clubs would be queuing up for him.”

Elsewhere, Sterling has acknowledged that England need a “big performance” if they are going to beat Germany:

“I think it was one of those we know we were going to get second place in that group and we knew that it was going to be a challenge.

“I think in this tournament you need these challenges. We need now to go against Germany and we need a big performance.

“If we’re going to win this tournament, if you’re going to be in with a shout, you’ve got to put in these big performances against the big sides and that’s what we’ll be looking to do on Tuesday.”
