Conte admits Spurs must do more to ‘create chances’ after stalemate

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has admitted his side must do more to create chances after they struggled to a 0-0 draw at Brentford.

Arsenal beat Manchester United 3-1 earlier in the day, as they all but ended United’s top four hopes and boosted their own.

The Gunners joy was then further boosted as Spurs failed to grab three points for the second week in a row. They were beaten by Brighton last weekend.

It could have been even worse for Spurs had Ivan Toney scored in the final few moments, however, the forward could only head against the post.

Spurs failed to have a shot on target for the second game in a row and Conte admitted they must improve that.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Italian said: “A tough game and for sure, it was a very difficult. They are physical. They tried to exploit set-pieces in a dangerous way. When there is the possibility, they try to put the ball into the box.

“Defensively we were good but at the same time I think we can do much better with the ball to create chances to score. The intensity was very high but we knew what type of game we would come to play.

“It’s a draw and I think when you cannot win, it’s important to take one point and we did this.

“We have found teams who have defended very deep and we find this type of situation is not simple but at the same time you have to attack and pay attention to their counter-attack. We watched the game Brentford played against Chelsea and they lost space in this type of situation.

“We are trying to do our best. For sure, we want to reach [as high as] possible. We started in a low position in November and I think we made many improvements.

“We have to continue to improve because I think it is not enough if we want to stay in this race. ut we have to be proud we are in this race as we started this work in November and to see the point we are in now, we have to be proud.”

“We have to try to give our best. For sure in November you cannot imagine to receive this question. Now we are in the race and we have to stay. We know it is very difficult.

“The opponent try to play more attention when they play against you but today is a good draw and I think it was against a Brentford team who played with good intensity and were very dangerous with set-pieces.”

On Christian Eriksen, who played under Conte at Inter, the Spurs boss added:  “Christian Eriksen is very good with the ball. He’s able to use both feet and be dangerous.

“It’s incredible on set-pieces and we are talking about a really good player. I was very happy to see him in this fantastic form.”
