Cooke, Smith Join “Thrones” Prequel Series

Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel,” “Ready Player One”), Emma D’Arcy (“Wanderlust,” “Truth Seekers”) and Matt Smith (“Doctor Who,” “The Crown”) have all joined the cast of the “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon” at HBO.

The series unfolds three centuries before the events of the recently concluded fantasy drama and tells the story of House Targaryen.

Cooke will play Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower who is the Hand of the King. Raised in the Red Keep, she’s smart but also has a keen political acumen.

D’Arcy is Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child and a dragonrider of pure Valyrian blood. A woman born with everything, but she is not a man in a world where that matters.

Smith will portray Prince Daemon Targaryen, younger brother to King Viserys and heir to the throne. A peerless warrior and a dragonrider, he possesses the true blood of the dragon.

They join the previously cast Paddy Considine as the kind and decent King Viserys Targaryen who was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King.

Several more episode directors have also been named including Greg Yaitanes (“Banshee”), Clare Kilner (“Snowpiercer”) and Geeta V. Patel (“The Witcher”). Ten episodes are being produced for the series co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal.

Miguel Sapochnik will direct the pilot and additional episodes.
