Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, which has been in the works for years, has seemingly found a potential director. Variety reports that Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is in discussions with Disney to direct the film.

It appears to be very early days for the film, as the report noted that Disney has yet to hire a writer or any cast. Additionally, the company has not yet made a call about releasing the movie in theatres or on Disney Plus, the site said.

The 2002 original Lilo & Stitch is a much-loved animated Disney film that follows a little girl and her sister who take in an alien–Experiment 626 AKA Stitch–who is programmed for destruction.

There were multiple Lilo & Stitch sequels and spin-offs, including new (straight-to-DVD) movies and a TV series. Multiple Lilo & Stitch video games were released, while the wider merchandising line has also proven to be popular and lucrative.

If it happens, Lilo & Stitch would be just the latest live-action remake of an earlier Disney film, following the likes of Beauty and the Best, Aladdin, and The Lion King, all of which generated more than $1 billion at the global box office. They haven’t all been as successful, however, as Tim Burton’s Dumbo made $353 million worldwide (which, to be sure, is still a massive number).
