Former Manchester City and Leeds defender Danny Mills says the only way Manchester United can turn around their fortunes on the pitch is by replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United have endured a tough start to the season, with their 6-1 battering at the hands of Tottenham last weekend their second loss from their first three Premier League games.
The Red Devils were somewhat fortune to beat Brighton too, needing a late, late Bruno Fernandes penalty to edge a 3-2 victory, after they were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace in their season opener.
Mauricio Pochettino was first-choice to replace Jose Mourinho when the Portuguese was sacked in December 2018, but Solskjaer’s excellent spell as caretaker manager convinced the hierarchy to give him the role on a permanent basis..
Less than two years later, the pressure is once again piling on Solskjaer, and reports claim that former Spurs boss Pochettino is being sounded out to take over at Old Trafford.
Mills believes that Solskjaer’s lack of experience has come back to bite him, and a change at the helm is needed to spark a change.
‘What can Manchester United do right now to change what they’re doing on the pitch? The only thing you can do is change the manager,’ Mills told talkSPORT.
‘Let’s say Leeds lose their manager right now, [Marcelo] Bielsa goes, he’s had enough, he walks out.
‘Okay, who do I want to replace him? You start looking at the names and you go: ‘[Jose] Mourinho, yes, Pep [Guardiola] yes, [Jurgen] Klopp, yes, [Carlo] Ancelotti, yep, Brendan Rodgers, yep, David Moyes, probably, Frank Lampard, yes, [Mikel] Arteta, yes’.
‘And then you start to think about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – not convinced.
‘He’s half way down the list at least and that’s without the likes of [Mauricio] Pochettino coming into the mix, people who are out of a job right now.
‘So the only thing you can change at Manchester United to improve them and improve the mentality, is the manager.
‘He’s not necessarily a bad coach but he’s inexperienced at this level and he looks out of his depth at times.’
