Emmerich Open To A “Moonfall” Sequel

Lionsgate

Master of fun sci-fi disaster epics Roland Emmerich (“2012,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Independence Day”) returns to the genre with next month’s “Moonfall”.

The filmmaker knows this ground well and the film follows his signature formula as it tells the story of our Moon being knocked from its orbit by an unknown force and put onto a collision course with Earth.

Two astronauts and a conspiracy theorist work together to attempt to avert disaster and discover that the moon is not what it seems. It seems the last part of that story description is key as Emmerich tells ComicBook.com that there’s room for a potential sequel:

“Maybe [Moonfall] is a cool one because then you could continue the story. But, that will happen if the movie is successful enough. Don’t forget. The moon falls on Earth, but it’s a side story. It’s more what’s inside the moon.”

Pressed for more details, he turned coy and says: “I’m a big believer in that you don’t give away the movie in advertising”.

Emmerich has only ever really done one sequel, “Independence Day: Resurgence,” a film he has expressed regret over as he originally had a “much better script” but then had to quickly cobble together another after Will Smith left the project.

Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Pena and Donald Sutherland star in “Moonfall” which opens in theaters on Friday, February 4th.
