“Furiosa” Sets June Shoot & 2023 Release

It’s official, the George Miller directed “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa” has set not just a filming start date but a release date as well.

As part of a press conference, and first reported on by Aussie entertainment reporter Angela Bishop, production on the new film will kick off this June in Australia, specifically in western Sydney and regional parts of the state of New South Wales which was employed by the first two “Mad Max” films.

Chris Hemsworth, Anya Taylor Joy and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II star in the project which is being dubbed the biggest production ever to shoot in the state. Miller was on hand at the press conference and says the film is actually larger in scale than ‘Fury Road’ in terms of storytelling span:

“‘Fury Road’ happened over three days and two nights [within the film]. This is a saga over many years and so there are a lot of different elements to it.”

Key to it all is federal and state governments offering a combined total of $135 million U.S. dollars in incentives to ensure that production will take place in Australia which is seeing a boom in shoots recently due to aggressive government financing schemes and a largely pandemic free population.

The production is expected to support more than 850 local jobs and bring $270 million U.S. dollars to the economy. Confirmed “Mad Max: Fury Road” returnees include production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt.

The project has also set a local release date of June 23rd 2023.

Hemsworth is presently in NSW’s capital city Sydney shooting Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love and Thunder”. While it is his fourth or so film shot in his home country, this will mark the first time he’s done a full Australian film.
