HBO Max Fills Out Its “DMZ” Series Cast

Rutina Wesley, Mamie Gummer, Nora Dunn, Henry G. Sanders, Venus Ariel, Jade Wu, Rey Gallegos, Agam Darshi and Juani Feliz are all set to join Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt in the four-part series adaptation of “DMZ” for HBO Max.

Based on the DC Vertigo comics title by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchilelli, the story takes place in a near-future where an American civil war has left Manhattan a demilitarized zone that is isolated from the rest of the world.

The action follows a female medic who is desperately searching for her lost son in the DMZ while contending with gangs, militias, and warlords all the while saving lives along the way.

Wesley will play Free States of America operative and secretive major power broker Athena, Gummer is tireless but jaded medic Rose, Dunn is the near-mythical all-female commune leader and water supply controller Oona, and Sanders is protective good citizen Cedric.

Ariel is foul-mouthed scavenger Nico, Wu is ex-revolutionary Susie, Gallegos is ruthless and devoted consigliere Cesar, Darshi is human smuggler Franklin, and Feliz is the DMZ’s biggest bad’s right-hand woman Carmen. Hoon Lee, Jordan Preston Carter and Freddy Miyares also star in the series.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay has already directed the first episode and executive produces the series alongside showrunner Roberto Patino for Warner Bros. Television.

Filmmaker Ernest Dickerson (“Bosch”) and Emmy winner Carly Wray (“Watchmen”) have also joined the team – Dickerson will executive produce and direct the remaining three episodes, while Wray has joined the writing team and will serve as co-executive producer.
