The recent release of Euphoria Season 2 on HBO, which stars Zendaya, has set a new viewership record for the streaming platform. Sunday night’s Season 2 premiere reached 2.4 million viewers across all platforms. This sets the record for “strongest digital premiere performance” for any HBO show since HBO Max launched in May 2021, according to Deadline.
The Season 2 premiere enjoyed ratings that were “nine times higher” than the Season 1 premiere in June 2019, though there was no HBO Max at the time. Also of note is that the 2.4 million viewers across all platforms for Euphoria Season 2’s premiere only counts people who watched it immediately. The numbers will no doubt grow this week and beyond as people catch up and watch at their leisure.
Euphoria was created and written by Sam Levinson, who also directed Zendaya in the movie Malcom & Marie, which stars John David Washington.
HBO Max’s next big release is the TV series Peacemaker, the spinoff from The Suicide Squad starring John Cena–it arrives on January 13. After that, the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is lined up to stream on HBO Max later this year.
