HBO, Safdies Filming A Paul Reubens Doco

“Uncut Gems” and “Good Time” helmers Benny and Josh Safdie are set to produce a two-part documentary about the life of actor Paul Reubens for HBO.

The network describes it thus: “A kaleidoscopic portrait told in two parts; the Paul Reubens documentary traces the life of the imaginative artist behind one of pop culture’s most celebrated and unlikely icons: Pee-wee Herman.”

Matt Wolf (“Spaceship Earth”) is helming the work which is also produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff (“The Irishman,” “Joker”), both Safdies and the brothers’ regular collaborator Sebastian Bear-McClard.

Last year it was revealed Reubens had approached the Safdies about potentialy directing a ‘dark Pee-wee Herman’ film, one he refers to as the “Valley of the Dolls Pee-wee movie” that explores the bad side of fame. The pair apparently were considering it at the time.
