Here’s How Much Disney’s Jungle Cruise Made At Box Office And On Disney Plus
Disney’s new Jungle Cruise movie starring The Rock and Emily Blunt set sail over the weekend, and it made a lot of money, both in theaters and from Disney+.
According to Deadline, the movie made $34.2 million in the US over the Friday-Sunday period, plus a further $27.6 million from international markets. On top of that, the movie pulled in more than $30 million from Disney+ with Premier Access to bring its total to around $91.8 million.
The majority of the Disney+ revenue is coming from the US, according to Deadline. For comparison, Marvel’s Black Widow made an estimated $60 million from Disney+ over its opening weekend. Series star Scarlett Johansson is now suing Disney over her deal with the media giant.
“We have delivered the No. 1 family film opening of the year and take great solace in that; one can’t compare the numbers to anything pre-pandemic,” Disney’s Tony Chambers said. “With great word of mouth and audience exits, we’ve exceeded our own and industry expectations.”
According to Deadline, Jungle Cruise was expected to make $25 million at the US box office and $65 million globally (before Disney+ numbers), so the film is indeed doing big numbers, but the figures aren’t strong enough by certain metrics, according to some people.
$91.8 million after one weekend is no doubt a pile of money, but it’s “not the ingredients to profit off a tentpole,” the report said. Separately, The New York Times reported that the movie cost $200 million to produce and carried costs of at least $100 million in marketing.
