How Derek Hough Is Doing After Testing Positive for COVID-19

Another person from Dancing with the Stars has tested positive for COVID-19. Dance pro and DWTS judge Derek Hough announced that he has a breakthrough COVID-19 infection.

“Hey everyone, I have some news to share, and I wanted you to hear it straight from me: Even though I’ve been fully vaccinated, I’ve just been diagnosed with a breakthrough case of COVID,” Hough, 36, told his Instagram followers in a brief video on Tuesday. “I just found out.”

It sounds like Hough has a mild case of the virus, but he did not share any specific symptoms (or clarify if he was asymptomatic). The dancer is following doctors’ advice to rest and recover while he self-isolates. “I feel okay. I feel strong,” Hough said. “But I’m currently taking advice from medical professionals, doing everything I can to get better as fast as I can. I’m currently in quarantine.”

Hough—who has been traveling back and forth between Los Angeles, where DWTS is filmed, and Las Vegas, where he has a show at The Venetian hotel—canceled the shows he was set to perform in Vegas this week. “This week’s shows in Vegas will be rescheduled for a date soon, stay tuned and I’ll announce the new dates shortly!” Hough wrote in the caption.

Hough didn’t say anything about the DWTS season 30 finale airing next week, but the judge will presumably be sitting out the live in-person taping. (People infected with COVID-19 are advised to self-isolate for at least 10 days after symptoms first appear or after testing positive, as SELF has reported, meaning Hough will still be in isolation when the episode airs on Monday.)

Hough told followers to stay tuned for more news in the meantime—and to look out for themselves. “Just want to send a lot of love out there to you all,” Hough said at the end of the video. “And yeah, stay safe.”

This isn’t Hough’s first time missing the show for a COVID-19-related reason. At the beginning of October, Hough skipped week three of filming because of a potential exposure to COVID-19, as People reported. “Although he’s fully vaccinated and tested negative, Derek will sit out tonight’s show out of an abundance of caution,” host Tyra Banks explained at the time. (Hough’s Las Vegas show was also canceled that week.)
