HBO has released the first trailer for docuseries I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, depicting the hunt for the Golden State Killer, and it will undoubtedly satisfy the appetite of true crime fans.

The series will document crime writer Michelle McNamara’s painstaking efforts into tracking down the notorious serial killer, who embarked on a murder and rape spree across California in the 70s and 80s.

Spanning over two minutes, the trailer opens with a victim of the Golden State Killer recalling her terrifying ordeal.

‘We were awakened by a voice and a bright light. It was a real sense of evil in the house,’ she says.

Another victim recalls: ‘He made me tie up my husband,’ while a male voice chimes in: ‘He ordered her to put dishes on my back,’ revealing the murderer’s methods.

Crime scene photos show the marks left on one victim’s wrists after being tied up, as well as an unmade bed with a broken plate on it.

According to one victim, the killer said: ‘If any of these dishes fall down, I’m going to kill your family.’

Michelle, who sadly died in 2016, then says: ‘I was in search of a man who was attacking women and girls throughout northern California.’

In throwback footage, she added: ‘The great tragedy to me with this case is that it’s not better known.’

Sharing the lengths Michelle would go to, one interviewee says: ‘This case is huge. Michelle would actually go to the crime scene and walk the case… the first time she called me I thought, “Hmm, she knows her stuff”.

One victim then recalls: ‘When these crimes began in the 70s, women didn’t talk about sexual assault because they were often blamed. Somehow it always came back to the women’s fault.

‘I don’t know how Michelle lived the horror of that day after day. She was writing a book and she was trying to solve the case.’

Michelle’s husband, comedian Patten Oswald, explains how they had to finish her book following her death.

The trailer closes with the arrest of the suspected Golden State Killer, revealed to be former police officer Joseph DeAngelo. He was taken into police custody in 2018 and is currently awaiting trial charged with eight counts of first degree murder.

Tragically, Michelle was never able to see the results of her hard work as she died in her sleep two years before the arrest in 2016.

Her book, also titled I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, was released two months before DeAngelo was apprehended.

I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, the docuseries, arrives on HBO Max on 28 June and will be released weekly.
