Following choking deaths related to a similar product, Xi Zhi Liang fruit jelly cups are under recall because of potential choking hazards.

“The potential choking hazard was noted during a routine inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, Food Safety and Inspection,” according to a company recall notice posted this afternoon by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“The product comes in pink, yellow, and blue plastic backpacks, with numerous individual plastic jelly cups inside each back pack, and a toy car in a pouch on the front of the plastic backpack. UPC code is 6902934982138.”

As of the posting of the recall notice no injuries had been confirmed in connection with the products recalled by Rong Shing Trading Ny Inc. of Brooklyn, NY.

There is concern that consumers may have the recalled products in their homes because the best-before date is Dec. 30 this year. The only other labeling information provided by the company was the weight of 21.1-ounce (600 gram) and 喜唧郎什果果凍杯.

“Small jelly cups containing konjac powder have previously been implicated in choking deaths of children,” according to the recall notice. “Small konjac powder jelly cups are presently under FDA import alert 35-15 and are not permitted for entry into the United States.

“The recalled jelly cups were distributed nationwide in retail food stores.”

Consumers who have the products are urged to throw them away. Consumers who have questions may contact the company at 718-308-1177 or [email protected].
