Netflix Pays $30M For “Malcolm & Marie”

Netflix is closing a deal for nearly $30 million for worldwide rights to romantic drama “Malcolm & Marie” starring Zendaya and John David Washington and hailing from HBO’s “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson.

Washington plays a filmmaker who returns home with his girlfriend (Zendaya) following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.

Shot quietly during the production lockdown on 35mm in black and white and following extensive COVID-19 safety protocols, the project marks the first post-pandemic film to complete production. Netflix beat out HBO, Amazon, Searchlight, MGM, Apple, A24 and Focus Features for the project.

The story follows two other major deals Netflix pulled off over the weekend including the Halle Berry-directed “Bruised” and the Vanessa Kirby-led “Pieces Of A Woman”.

The film was shot for a modest budget and some of the key crew made deals that will see them profit off the back end. A portion of the proceeds of this sale will be shared with Feeding America.
