Joining the rest of New York, movie theaters in New York City itself will soon re-open. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this week that cinemas in New York City will be able to open again, at a limited capacity, beginning on March 5.
Theaters can only accept 25% capacity, the governor said, and a cap of 50 people per screen. Everyone must wear a mask and follow other health and safety protocols as part of the directive, according to a writeup from Deadline.
Movie theaters in the rest of New York have been open since October 2020.
The massive movie chain AMC Entertainment said it would open all 13 of its NYC locations on March 5. “Governor Cuomo’s announcement that movie theatres can reopen in New York City in the first week of March is another important step towards restoring the health of the movie theatre industry and of our company,” CEO Adam Aron said.
As part of the new rules, people attending NYC movie theaters must wear a mask except for when they are sitting and eating. There will be assigned seating for films and theaters will have additional staff to accomodate the new measures. There will also be better air filtration systems, along with stepped-up ventilation and purification for air.
