“Paddington 2” No Longer The Best Film

A few weeks ago, Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” lost its 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to the reprinting of a negative review of the film from a 1941 newspaper clipping.

That meant that the beloved “Paddington” sequel, with its 100% rating, was now the best-reviewed film of all time on the site. For a few weeks that record has held… until now.

Now a newly published negative review of “Paddington 2” on Film Authority from critic Eddie Harrison has gone up and has seen “Paddington 2” lose that 100%.

Harrison appears to know what he’s doing with the review in question including the rather defensive quote: “I reviewed Paddington 2 negatively for BBC radio on release in 2017, and on multiple occasions after that, and I stand by every word of my criticism.”

That said, his negativity stems mostly from the not unfair criticism that the film deviates from the spirit of Michael Bond’s children’s books with the bear here being “over-confident, snide and sullen” and adds that “considerations of race and identity, key to the Paddington character, are not addressed.”

It’s also worth noting that Harrison reportedly has over 600 reviews on his Film Authority site which go back several decades and is generally not a contrarian.

The new ‘best film of all time’ according to Rotten Tomatoes is now “Toy Story 2”.
