Over a year after getting sick with COVID-19, Pink revealed just how serious her battle with the illness was. And she said that, at one point, she believed she might not survive the infection.
“This is going to sound crazy, but we had COVID last year, very early in March, and it was really, really bad and I rewrote my will,” Pink told Heart Radio host Mark Wright this week.
Both Pink and her son, Jameson, then three, were extremely sick, while her husband, Carey Hart, and daughter, Willow, were okay. Along with rewriting her will just in case she didn’t make it, Pink asked her best friend to tell Willow how much her mother loved her. “At the point where I thought it was over for us, I called my best friend and I said, ‘I just need you to tell Willow how much I loved her,’” Pink recalled. “It was really, really scary and really bad.”
That terrifying experience is what led Pink to write her newest single, “All I Know So Far,” which is about communicating everything she wanted her children to know in the case of her death. “As a parent, you think about, you know, what am I leaving for my kid? What am I teaching them?” she explained. “And are they going to make it in this world, this crazy world that we live in now? And what do I need to tell them if this is the last time I ever get to tell them anything? And so that was kind of this song.”
In April 2020, after recovering from her scary bout with the coronavirus, Pink told Ellen DeGeneres that her earliest symptoms weren’t indicative of COVID-19, as E! News reported. But around the time that her sick son’s fever began to spike, “I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t breathe,” Pink said. Pink, who has asthma, said she had to use a nebulizer for the first time in 30 years, and that she also needed her rescue inhaler to breathe. “That’s when I started to get really scared.”
Her son, Jameson, also had trouble breathing and chest pains, as well as vomiting. “That’s the point where you are just kind of like, okay, are we going to the hospital? Like what are we doing right now? Because this is the scariest thing I’ve ever been through in my whole life,” she said.
In an April 2020 Instagram post revealing her experience with COVID-19, Pink said she and her son rode the illness out at home. “My family was already sheltering at home and we continued to do so for the last two weeks following the instruction of our doctor,” she wrote. “Just a few days ago we were re-tested and are now thankfully negative.”
At the time, when COVID-19 tests were extremely hard to come by, Pink also acknowledged in her Instagram how lucky she was to get tested and called out the “absolute travesty and failure of our government” to make testing widely accessible. The singer also urged people to take the virus seriously. “This illness is serious and real,” she wrote. “People need to know that the illness affects the young and old, healthy and unhealthy, rich and poor, and we must make testing free and more widely accessible to protect our children, our families, our friends, and our communities.”
