Talks underway as Saints reignite interest in Man Utd defender

Southampton are once again pursuing Man Utd full-back Brandon Williams, according to reports.

The Englishman came through the Red Devils’ academy before making his debut in September 2019.

He became an important squad member in 2019/20 but saw his opportunities limited in the season just finished.

His situation seems to have alerted the Saints, who previously targeted a loan move in January.

According to the Daily Mail, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are growing increasingly confident that a deal can be struck for Williams.

Discussions between the two clubs are thought to be progressing well.

The Saints have already bolstered their defensive options in the transfer window.

They brought in Romain Perraud from Stade Brest on a four-year deal. The Frenchman mainly operates as a left-back and will replace Ryan Bertrand in the squad.

Williams will likely act as cover for Perraud next term. He can also play on the right side of defence and will therefore be useful if Kyle Walker-Peters picks up another injury.

Williams has previously been linked with Newcastle United and Bayer Leverkusen, although Southampton are the only club pursuing as it stands.

The report also provides an update on the Saints’ hunt for Adam Armstrong.

Once a deal for Williams has been sorted, they will turn their attention to the Blackburn forward.

The former England U21 international bagged 28 goals in the Championship last season and would be a great addition to the squad.

He’s been earmarked as a potential replacement for Danny Ings, should the prolific goalscorer move on this summer.

Blackburn look set to hold out for a significant fee. They want between £12m-15m due to Newcastle’s 40 per cent sell-on clause.

The summer is shaping up to be a busy one for Southampton as they will additionally have to fend off interest in Jannik Vestergaard.

The centre-back impressed in the Premier League last season, forming a decent partnership with Jan Bednarek.

He’s currently on international duty with Denmark but could be the subject of a bid from Tottenham soon.
