Villeneuve: “Dune: Part Two” Highly Likely

Warner Bros. Pictures

Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve made it clear from the get-go that the upcoming film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic “Dune” is the first of a planned two-part saga.

However with the pandemic still active and with the movie shifting to a simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max day-and-date strategy, there has been genuine questions as to whether diminished box office might sabotage any chance of the second part being made.

Speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Villeneuve says he’s optimistic about the chances of “Dune: Part Two” which he’ll know the fate of by December. He adds that things would need to go “really badly” for the follow-up not to happen.

The film recently had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to mostly glowing reviews. Writing is far along on the sequel which Villeneuve hopes to shoot next Fall.

“Dune: Part One” opens in cinemas and on HBO Max on October 22nd.
