When Do Kids Start Learning to Play the Guitar?

Many parents often wonder about when the right age for their children to start taking guitar lessons.

Unlike with other musical instruments, such as the piano, flute or violin, the guitar is a larger instrument and so you need to take this into account.

Most schools tend to have guitar lessons for children once they have reached the age of 7 or thereabouts. This is from my personal experience.

I think that's about right too.

Any younger and I think your child would struggle to hold the guitar properly. After all the guitar is a large instrument and to hold it comfortably, I do not think a 4 or 5 year old would be able to do this easily.

The other thing to remember is that you will need to have fairly strong fingers and hands because these are what you use to play the guitar. Unlike, playing the drums for example, where you also need to use your hands, playing the guitar requires a dexterity in your finger movements and an element of control. Again, this is not something that a very young child is going to have.

Around the age of 7 however, you can start working the hands and fingers gradually and gently in order to build up the strength and flexibility of your fingers and hands and this is something that helps you to play the guitar and to play it well.

Parents can often get carried away when it comes to putting their children forward for new activities. They might get all excited at the prospect of their little ones learning to play the piano or guitar as well as doing numerous other school activities. There is a fine line between being a pushy parent and trying to expose your children to different discipline without being too overbearing.

Before you put your child forward for guitar lessons, ask them whether this is something they really want to do. Ideally, the request for wanting to learn a new instrument, or taking up a new activity, should come from you child, and not the other way around. Listen to your children and only book them up to learn a musical instrument if this is something they want to do. Do not do it because it is your dream.

In all, I think around 7 is the ideal age to learn to play the guitar, if you have a child who is slightly younger, this might be alright. Just make sure they are comfortable holding the guitar and will be able to cope with playing it.
