Netflix has announced the start of production on The Witcher Season 3 with a photo from the show’s snowy set. The streaming service also released an official plot summary for the next batch of episodes.

The synopsis reads: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line–or risk losing each other forever.”

Back in January, it was already being reported the show was gearing up to begin production after a series of Instagram posts from the creative team. Season 2 of The Witcher hit Netflix in mid-December 2021, and it shouldn’t come as a shock that Season 3 is moving forward so quickly. While doing press for Season 2 in December, Hissrich mentioned in several interviews that they were already nearly done with writing the next season. As was announced back in October 2021 also by Hissrich, Season 3 will “follow a particular book [in the Witcher novel series] very closely… [it] has a lot of action, some death.” Hissrich also said that the next season will be “really fun.”

In addition to the main show, Netflix recently released the animated movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, while a prequel live-action series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is in the works. Additionally, a second animated Witcher film and a new “kids and family” series set in the world of The Witcher are coming as well.

Speaking of Witcher and the number three, the last Witcher game released was The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt in 2015. In late March it was finally revealed that a new Witcher game is in development, and it will use the Unreal Engine 5.
