MCU star Anthony Mackie will play the lead character, John Doe, in the upcoming TV series based on the Sony video game Twisted Metal. As announced previously, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came up with the idea for the show. Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) is writing the series.

According to Deadline, the producers at Sony Pictures TV and PlayStation Productions are “extremely high on” the show and will begin to shop it around to networks soon.

“We’re thrilled to have Anthony Mackie on board. His ability to blend comedy, action and drama is perfect for the Twisted world we’re creating,” PlayStation Productions boss Asad Qizilbash said.

Deadline also has the details on the TV show’s story. It will follow Mackie’s Doe, who is a “motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.”

“With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck,” reads a line from the show’s description. “Doe is a smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives. With no memory of his past, Doe gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of savage vehicular combat.”

Mackie is perhaps best known for his MCU role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in a number of MCU films. Next up he will play Captain America in the next entry in the series.

A new Twisted Metal video game is also said to be in development to create a synergistic effect with the TV show, but it has not been officially announced.
