Netflix, Skydance and Japan’s Production I.G (“Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045”) are all teaming up to produce an anime series based on James Cameron’s “The Terminator” sci-fi franchise.
Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman” film, will act as showrunner and executive producer on the project. Details of the new take have not been revealed.
The films launched in 1984 as a low-budget action movie starring a then little known Arnold Schwarzenegger and helmed by Cameron. Scoring strong acclaim and box-office success, Cameron returned to helm the sequel “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”.
The franchise however has floundered a bit since then, four more films (none directed by Cameron) have come out to either mixed or bad reviews. A 2008 short-lived live-action series starring Lena Headey scored solid reviews though.
In a statement, Tomlin says: “Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
Tomlin is also attached to screen adaptations of comic books “Fear Agent” and “Memetic” and the Mega Man game franchise.
