The 2021 Venice Film Festival, arguably the festival that has emerged the most as the one home to major Oscar contenders, has unveiled its lineup full of anticipated new films for this year.
Scoring out of competition screenings are Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel,” Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho,” David Gordon Green’s “Halloween Kills,” Potsy Ponciroli’s western “Old Henry” and the full run of HBO’s “Scenes from a Marriage” five-episode mini-series.
In competition films include a bunch of high-profile auteur-driven projects including Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” Pedro Almodovar’s “Parallel Mothers,” Pablo Larrain’s “Spencer,” Paul Schrader’s “The Card Counter,” Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Hand of God,” Ana Lily Amirpour’s “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter,” Xavier Giannoli’s “Lost Illusions” and Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat’s “Official Competition”.
“Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho will preside over the main jury which also includes “Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao, French actress Virginie Efira (“Benedetta”), UK actress Cynthia Erivo (“Widows”), Canadian actor/producer Sarah Gadon, Italian director Saverio Costanzo and Romanian director Alexander Nanau.
