Harrelson Wont Return For More True Detective

HBO’s celebrated crime anthology series “True Detective” may be moving on without its original creator Nic Pizzolatto.

In early 2019, when the show’s third season aired, Pizzolatto said he had a “wild” and “extremely ambitious” idea for the fourth season which he hoped HBO would let him do.

A year later Pizzolatto had signed a new first-look deal with FX Productions to create “Redeemer” starring Matthew McConaughey – although that show was scrapped and Pizzolatto is trying to extricate himself from the FX deal.

This week Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, tells Deadline they are moving forward with a new writer and a whole new direction for “True Detective”:

“It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take. It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting, and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us, so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it.”

“Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and “Cromo” co-creator Lucia Puenzo have been linked as potential replacements for Pizzolatto. The show’s first three seasons ran between 2014 and 2019.
