Piers Morgan has come to blows with Love Island star Malin Andersson over Cosmopolitan’s body-positive January issue.
The Good Morning Britain presenter was not impressed to see that the women’s magazine had included plus-size models on the front of its cover alongside the caption ‘this is healthy’, in promotion of a feature that wellness doesn’t have to be one-size-fits-all.
Taking to Twitter to complain about the shoot, Piers blasted: ‘No, it’s not. And given that obesity is a major factor in why many get severe Covid illness, this @CosmopolitanUK cover is shamefully irresponsible.’
Malin, who is a champion of body positivity and has been advocating for years, replied: ‘You are disgusting.’
Her response prompted Piers to hit back, and in another tweet, he wrote: ‘Actually, what’s “disgusting” is a big-selling magazine glamourising obesity at the height of a pandemic involving a virus that targets obese people more than any other weight-group.’
Cosmopolitan’s cover has divided many since its publication.
One person fumed: ‘Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death and raises individuals’ risk to complications from Covid-19. I’m sorry, this is not healthy.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘No Cosmopolitan, obesity isn’t healthy as it causes: hypertension, high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia), Type 2 diabetes, Coronary heart disease, Stroke, Gallbladder disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep apnea & breathing problems, many types of cancers.
‘Bad role models for kids.’
However, many have defended the cover in question.
‘You can’t tell from looking at someone if they are healthy or not,’ penned one.
‘Sorry but healthy is not just based on size, being healthy is all round psychical and mental. It’s ok for magazines to have underweight girls on the covers and no one bats an eyelid and it is deemed socially normal and healthy.
‘Double standards,’ wrote another.
