The trailer for a fifth “Scream” arrived earlier this week, the clip offering a first proper look at the film which sees returning characters like Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley alongside some new faces.

The new film marks the first one without the late Wes Craven at the helm. Instead it hails from Radio Silence, the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett and executive producer Chad Villella, who directed the acclaimed dark comedy-horror “Ready or Not”.

Bettinelli-Olpin recently sat down with Bloody Disgusting to talk about that trailer and confirmed that those worried about spoilers, whether you saw it or not, need not do so. As expected, the trailer was designed with a bunch of misdirection in mind and when asked about this he responded:

“This was a hard trailer for [marketing] to put together, and I think one of the things we’re happy with is that anything that you might think is a spoiler in this, there’s a good chance you’re wrong.

There are misdirects within the movie. There are misdirects within the trailer. For us, that’s just the fun of the whole thing to make this a big whodunnit.

As deep, deep fans of the original four, we took pains to populate the world of this movie, and certainly the materials with as many fun nods and Easter eggs and misdirects as possible.”

The awareness of the audience’s awareness also played into the writing of the script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, with Bettinelli-Olpin saying the script tries to flip “expectations upside-down as many times as possible”.

The new “Scream” arrives in cinemas in January.
