Ariana Grande has brought her Sweetener World Tour right into our living rooms through her new documentary, Excuse Me, I Love You, which has hit Netflix today.
The concert movie takes fans behind-the-scenes of Ariana’s acclaimed tour in London last year, giving us pure nostalgia for when gigs were actually a thing pre-pandemic.
Interspersed with the set list, which features songs old and new from Dangerous Woman to 7 Rings and Break Free – are up-close glimpses of all the backstage action in rehearsals, dressing rooms and tour buses.
Fans get to see dancers share unscripted moments of banter and raw on-stage moments with Ariana – who just announced her engagement to Dalton Gomez – that you might have missed if you were sitting in the rafters at the O2 Arena.
Needless to say, there were some priceless moments in Excuse Me, I Love You which have left fans both ‘sobbing’ and laughing in equal measure at the ‘magical’ experience.
Mariah Carey appreciation
We’ve always known that Mariah has been a huge source of inspiration for Ariana musically and now we get to see the actual moment when the queen of Christmas returns the favour.
During a phone call, Ariana’s manager Scooter Braun reminds her: ‘Just wanted to remind you about the Mariah thing. All you gotta do is put it on and dance around with your friends and yourself.’
‘Does that mean she likes me?’ Ariana asks bashfully, to which Scooter reassures: ‘She actually likes you a lot.’
Ariana then says to the camera: ‘Mariah is doing a video for All I Want For Christmas Is You and it’s like a compilation of some of her favourite artists right now.
‘That’s what they said anyway to me and she asked me to be one of them. And apparently, the request came directly from her so I don’t know how to feel right now.’
She later reveals: ‘I learnt to sing by mimicking her and Beyonce and Whitney and that’s how I learned to do runs. Listening and being like, “Oh s**t”. Can I do that?
‘It just means a lot to hear from her because my sound was so influenced by her and the 90s pop sound. The fact that she thought of me is like very soul-shaking. It just means a lot as an artist and as a fan. It’s pretty cool.’
Trump’s impeachment
It seems nobody was happier about President Donald Trump getting impeached last year than Ariana.
In a very raw moment, a crew member breaks the news to Ariana mid-rehearsal and the singer was beyond elated.
Immediately halting rehearsals, Ariana gaps and says: ‘Oh my God! Guys! Right now?’
A stage hand then explains: ‘We still have to go to trial, but yeah.’
Spreading the news, Ariana says into the microphone: ‘When’s trial? Trump is impeached!’
Ever dramatic, the singer throws herself down on the floor before having a party with her dancers.
The earpiece drop
Sometimes, Ariana just needs a moment to appreciate the sound of her audience.
Joan Grande giving away tickets
In perhaps the sweetest moment of the Sweetener Tour, Ariana’s mum Joan did a good deed and gave away tickets to a young girl who was afraid of heights.
Joan continued paying it forward by bringing another concert-goer into the stage pit after learning he was at the concert alone.
Also, special shout-out for Joan’s introduction to the documentary through her title card which read: ‘Joan Grande. Need we say more?’
Poo-gate
One night on her private jet, Ariana recounted the moment one of her friends stepped in her dog’s poo and dragged it through the house before her other pet pooch began eating the dump.
Ariana’s tales made for one of the more hilarious moments of the documentary but it wasn’t only her bestie Alfredo Flores who wanted to gag.
Ariana Grande’s Excuse Me, I Love You is available to watch on Netflix now.
