After several weeks of smaller releases, the Memorial Day holiday weekend kicks off the Summer movie season with two major titles – “A Quiet Place Part II” and “Cruella”.
Both films officially open today, but both had early previews last night and did numbers not that far off pre-pandemic levels.
Deadline reports that “A Quiet Place Part II” grossed $4.8 million last night from its exclusive to cinema run while “Cruella” managed $1.4 million from the theatrical part of its release (it’s also on Disney+ with premium pricing).
To put that in perspective, the original “A Quiet Place” scored $4.3 million in Thursday night previews back in 2018. Early estimates had ‘Quiet’ taking $30 million for the four-day weekend domestically, while “Cruella” was expected to get around $17 million.
Those estimates are likely to be revised upwards now. More on this as it develops over the holiday.
