Snyder On League Opening Song Batman

In the wake of the DC FanDome panel and trailer launch, filmmaker Zack Snyder has spoken some more about his upcoming ‘SnyderCut’ of the 2017 DC Comics superhero team-up film “Justice League”.

As previously reported, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and the approximately 2000 visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut which will first come in the form of four one-hour episodes before being joined together in one four-hour film.

Speaking to The Reel in Motion podcast, Snyder broke down some of the highlights of the trailer shown, the use of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for the song, his thoughts on Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and more. First up, he confirms the shot of Superman being stabbed by Doomsday is part of the opening montage of the film and it is seen from a “certain perspective” – namely Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne:

“You’ll see at the beginning of ‘Justice League,’ there’s another where you see Bruce – or Batman – lowering the grenade launcher that he used to fire the last kryptonite round [at Doomsday] and you see him seeing the sacrifice that Superman – what he’s just done. It’s full circle if you think about the first moment he sort of saw Superman and was like, ‘That motherf—er!’ And now he’s like, ‘That guy just gave his life to save all of us.’”

Snyder says he decided to use Cohen’s song for the trailer nearly two years ago, saying: “It’s something that I just felt like, you know, was right for this… that song, in particular, really, for all of us, it has significance beyond just the movie.” Separately, storyboard artist Jay Oliva explained to a critical fan: “he chose that one because of the long road it took to get here and what it meant to his daughter’s memory during post production on the film.”

Finally, Snyder was also enthusiastic about Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” trailer, saying:

“I don’t know yet what the rating is going to be, but I felt the same way. I actually just texted Matt [Reeves] after and I was like, ‘What the f—! This is cool! I loved it. I thought it was so cool. I thought it was the right direction and everything about it. As far as just being a fan, it’s the kind of movie I want to see, so I felt like [two thumbs up].”

“Zack Snyder’s Justice League” arrives on HBO Max sometime in 2021.
