In the earliest days of my yoga practice, I just hated props. When a teacher used to come and interrupt me during the practice for offering a strap or block, I just hated that moment and used to say “Nope. I don’t need it!” May be my ego was on the high at that time. Luckily, that ego battle didn’t last for long and I understood the true value of props. Props are just like typing out a document on the computer instead of writing it out from a pencil. They help you not only in achieving the en result quickly, but also in achieving it properly. One I realized it, I learnt yoga from a steady and fast speed without much injuries.

Here are 5 ways in which props help me during the practice:

  1. Getting rid of ego. First things first – undoubtedly they help me in getting rid of my ego. The moment when I realized that taking the help of props doesn’t mean that I know less about yoga, my ego went away not only for my yoga session but also from various other parts of my life. And needless to say that it’s a certainly good thing. This was an insanely great lesson that made me realize the fact that yoga isn’t about poses – it’s about the mindfulness and precision.
  2. Decreasing risk of injuries when I’m practicing a challenging pose. Although I’m not ready to stand in the middle of my room in Scorpion pose, still I can do it if I take the help of a few props. I just need a wall for balancing myself, a block that reminds me of toning my muscles and a strap for stabilizing my arms. It becomes possible to perform the toughest yoga poses if you take the help of props.
  3. Learning the nuances of any pose again. For tough personalities like me it’s a hard job to learn the nuances of a pose. By using props it has become easier for me to learn those nuances.
  4. Connecting to the floor. If you find it harder to have a solid connection with floor, you’ll struggle a lot in finding stability – something that’s a must for safety during the asanas. And it’s not just limited to the safety. In fact, stability helps you in creating the space that’s required in your body during an active pose. Props like bolster and block help a lot in achieving stability and grip on the floor so you don’t fall and get injured during the practice.
  5. Going deeper. Often props can help you in going deeper into a pose. For example, a strap can often help you in puling yourself more forward into a forward bending pose.
