Most people don’t have a large, yoga studio-sized amount of space to spare in their home. It’s not about how much space you have, but how you use it that counts. You can have all the space in the world for your yoga practice, but if your heart isn’t in it, your practice won’t really matter. So rule #1 of creating a sacred space, is to follow your heart and true-self.

The second step in making a sacred, yoga space is to find a space that has special meaning to you. Maybe it’s a place where you find you can relax or maybe it faces east and that’s the direction your family is in.

Whatever the connection, if it has meaning to you, it makes your yoga practice that much more personal to your heart. Be mindful of not choosing a place where you usually work or feel stress, unless you’re trying to counter-condition yourself in that space. For example, if you work in the den a lot and you choose that to be your yoga space, in the beginning you may feel tense and anxious instead of relaxed and open to breathe because you usually do work in that space.

One thing to note is that your sacred space does not have to be large. Even if it’s just a corner of a room, that is fine. The important thing is that it is a special and relaxing place for you.

The next thing to consider is the kind of symbols or decorations you want in your space. Whether it’s the symbol of Om, a woven blanket, chimes, candles, incense, or other special decorations, you can bring what’s important to you, into your sacred space. A great idea is to put a decorative room divider up to separate your relaxation space from the rest of the room.

Putting a blanket or covering over your things when you’re done with your yoga practice is a symbolic way of keeping the calming feelings. You can tap into this whenever you need to throughout the day. Let your family members know when you’re going into your yoga space so they know that interruptions are not allowed. Be sure to turn your phone off and other gadgets, to avoid any possible distractions. The more relaxing and calming your space is for you, the better you will feel in it.
